Holloway Prison Stories and Reclaim Holloway have released a short film making the case for a women’s building to be part of any future development of the former Holloway prison site.
The film features interviews with women affected by the criminal justice system and women who provided support to those in Holloway.
Our latest report, Holloway Prison: Community Perspectives summarises findings from a survey of 930 individuals and organisations. We found that there was strong support for;
- The land to remain in public ownership
- Genuinely affordable housing
- Community space
- Green space
- Provision of services for women, children and young people
Islington Council’s draft planning brief makes provision for a women’s building at the site, but there are concerns that this could be sidelined or even excluded by developers.
When Holloway prison closed the women were moved to other prisons outside of the city including HMP Bronzefield. In November, the Evening Standard reported on warnings from the Bronzefield Independent Monitoring Board that shortage of housing and lack of adequate support for women leaving prison is leaving them extremely vulnerable to abuse and harm.
